Booz Allen Hamilton' Business Expanding
KETTERING — Five years ago, the work force in the management consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton's Dayton-area office stood at 60 people. A year ago, it was at about 150.
Today, it has 250 employees. Sharon Muzik, the Booz Allen partner in charge of the office, said she envisions an increase to 300 employees by a year from now, as the organization expands its business serving Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and, to a lesser extent, the Defense Finance and Accounting Service in Indianapolis and Columbus.
The company moved into an additional 5,000 square feet of office space in its Miami Valley Research Park quarters in early February, increasing its total to 22,000 square feet. It is likely to rent an additional 5,000 square feet within six months to accommodate the increased staffing and business, said Rick Holley, lead principal in the office.
As a whole, defense contractors are thriving as the Defense Department boosts spending on the war on terror and becomes increasingly dependent on private companies to help achieve its mission.
Booz Allen's local business got a boost recently when the firm won a new round of bidding to support the Air Force Research Laboratory's virtual combat laboratory that provides electronically simulated tests of various combinations of weapons and sensing systems.
Booz Allen is the prime contractor, pairing with subcontractors BAE Systems and Dynamics Analytics & Test Inc. on the project. The six-year contract is valued at $18.6 million. It has been a factor in the growth of the company's regional business, Holley said.
It also helped that Booz Allen invested $2 million in the local office within the past 2½ years in recognition of the region's potential in government business, he said. That gave the office additional resources to pursue new business.
Additions to its staff during that time have included engineers, financial analysts, information technology network specialists and software developers. The influx has included transfers from other Booz Allen offices around the country and new hires from outside, among them graduates of Wright State University and the University of Dayton.
Booz Allen, a privately owned company based in McLean, Va., doesn't publicly disclose financial results. Holley said, however, that revenues from the Dayton-area office have increased 80 percent during the past two years.
